Getting To Door County

Located on the scenic peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan, Door County is one of Wisconsin’s most beloved destinations. With over 300 miles of stunning shoreline, this area offers unmatched natural beauty and a sense of escape that begins the moment you arrive.

As you enter the peninsula, you'll first pass through Southern Door, a quiet and scenic stretch of countryside that serves as the perfect introduction to the Door County experience. Known for its rolling farm fields, wooded backroads, and friendly small towns like Brussels, Forestville, and Maplewood.

The Sturgeon Bay Shipping Canal cuts through the peninsula, making Sturgeon Bay the gateway to Northern Door. To continue north, you’ll cross one of three iconic bridges-each offering a memorable glimpse of the working waterfront below.

Once you cross the bridge in Sturgeon Bay, Door County splits into two scenic routes—each offering its own charm and views:

Highway 57 - The Lakeside Route

Head up the east side of the peninsula along Lake Michigan on Highway 57. This route takes you through peaceful woodlands, cherry orchards, and the charming lakeside towns of Jacksonport, Baileys Harbor, and Sister Bay (via County Roads). It’s a quieter, more forested drive—perfect for travelers seeking serenity, lighthouses, and shoreline hikes. Highway 57 ends in Sister Bay making for the perfect loop-hitting all the must-stops on both 42 and 57!

Highway 42 - The Bayside Route

Follow Highway 42 north along the west side, hugging the shores of Green Bay. This route winds through vibrant harbor towns like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Sister Bay—each filled with galleries, shops, and waterfront views. Famous for its final stretch of dramatic curves leading to Northport Pier, Highway 42 is a must-drive for first-time visitors and Door County regulars alike.

Whichever route you choose (or both!), 42 and 57 offer two distinct ways to explore the peninsula.

Take the Ferry to Washington Island

At the very tip of the Door County peninsula, Highway 42 ends at Northport Pier, where your journey can continue across the water. Hop aboard the Washington Island Ferry, a car and passenger ferry that sails across the legendary Death’s Door Passage to Washington Island-a peaceful, windswept island rich with Scandinavian heritage, lavender farms, and rocky shorelines.

The ferry runs multiple times daily in season and accommodates vehicles, bikes, and walk-on passengers. It’s not just transportation—it’s part of the adventure, offering scenic views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding islands. Once you arrive, take your time exploring by car or bike, and don’t miss iconic stops like Schoolhouse Beach, Stavkirke Church, and the Farm Museum. Whether it’s a day trip or a longer island escape, the ferry to Washington Island is a quintessential Door County experience
